Costa Rica Proposal
Hi there. I’m Crystal Elizabeth Saylor, 27 years old, from Newport Beach, California. I’m a very active professional hairstylist in Costa Mesa at Phenix Salon Suites. Second only to my future husband, my greatest love is helping people find their inner confidence and beauty. My fiancé, Christien Byron Cazarez, is 28 years old and from Huntington Beach, California. He is an incredible Realtor with The Rose Team at First Team Real Estate. His passion is helping people find their dream homes; from couples to families, Chris takes pride in helping others start a new chapter in their life.
Our story begins, not how we met, but how we “re-met.” Originally, we met in 2005 at Brethren Christian High School in Huntington Beach. I was on the Cheer team and Chris was on both the Football and the Basketball team. We saw each other often but only as school friends and not anything more…yet. I left Brethren to attend Newport Harbor for the Cheer squad a year later. We would see each other from time to time over the next 5 years but it wasn’t until the 4th of July in 2011 when we reconnected through a mutual friend. Sparks were flying that day and we both became inseparable.
A couple days went by until Chris built up the courage to ask me out on a proper date. If you know anything about me, you will know I love music and dancing, things we both share in common… Chris took me to one of his favorite spots in LA, where we had a fancy dinner, listened to some great music, and danced the night away. Two months of dating flew by. Every day we spent together only reassured me how lucky we were to have found each other, until two months went by and we were still not “official.” Little did I know, the only reason Chris didn’t ask me to be his girlfriend on the very first date was because he didn’t want to be one of those “weirdos” who rushes into things. So he enjoyed every second he got to spend with me until he couldn’t wait any longer and on September 25, 2011 he made the second best decision of his life and asked the girl of my dreams to be his girlfriend. I said, “yes.”
5 1/2 years later myself, Chris, Chris’ sister Janelle, and brother Eric, were planning a trip to Costa Rica for their mother Debbie’s Birthday. We were planning to keep it a surprise but she kept making other plans so we couldn’t keep it from her. We were all excited to enjoy time together on the vacation since we’ve never been on a family trip like that together. Once we were in Costa Rica, we had the time of our lives tubing, playing with monkeys, enjoying the hot springs, floating in the pool, and last but not least, amazing food and drinks. One of the many things I will never forget was how big the insects were… literally the size of my hand.
On the day before the end of the trip, we enjoyed the day by the pool relaxing and resting. Janelle had to take off to go set up dinner for Debbie as a surprise on the beach. We all went back to the hotel room to freshen up. Debbie and Janelle left and went to meet Eric cause Chris still had to shower. All the while he was stalling for something much bigger. As we were almost ready, Janelle called and said the golf cart was arriving to pick us up so we didn’t have to walk so far… at this point I was thinking, “where in the world is this birthday dinner?” As we arrived to the beach where dinner was supposed to be, a gentleman wearing a resort uniform said, “Mr. Cazarez, the phone is for you.” Chris somehow grabbed the ring without my knowledge and played it off like he was speaking to his mom. Chris lead me to this pathway that was covered in rose petals and candles… at this point I was thinking, “what an amazing birthday dinner.” I remember saying to Chris that this was “beautiful for your momma” and he looked at me and smiled. As we got closer to the beautiful gazebo over looking the sunset on the beach, I said “your mom isn’t here yet, let’s we wait for her?” He started fittling with his phone and said “I have to read this sorry.” Confused, I said, “okay?” He then said to me with the biggest smile on his face and brightest sparkle in his eye; “Crystal Elizabeth Saylor- over the past 5 1/2 years we’ve grown up together always having each others backs and through all that we’ve been through, we’ve made it as a team and never gave up on each other. You’ve made me a better man and you make me want to work harder everyday to make you proud to call me the love of your life. I’ve known since forever that you were my soulmate and I can’t ever imagine life without my best friend. I’ve dreamed about this day since I asked you to be my girlfriend on September 25th 2011 when we danced and listened to music. I love you with all that I am. (as he got down on one knee) Crystal Elizabeth Saylor will you marry me?” I got down and gave him the biggest hug and kiss with tears of joy running down my face. This Moment I will remember forever! Chris’s family came out from hiding and joined us for photos and champagne. All night I had the biggest butterflies and to this day, have not stopped smiling. I said, “yes.”
The ring was a BIG SURPRISE and we actually never went ring shopping with each other. But I did have a pintrest board of rings I liked and pinned. He went off of that and of course asked my best girlfriend what I liked. He said he shopped around for a long time but nothing he loved spoke to him and finally went to Princess Bride Diamonds in Huntington Beach. He went all by himself and had his sister help guide him along the way to find the perfect ring. Cody and Lisa helped him at Princess Bride and he told them that my nickname his nephew gave me is sparkles and it has stuck. So he wanted something that really sparkles and something that is in. Boy the man did good!! I love my ring!!! I’m so happy it was a surprise.
What is one piece of advice you wish you had when you started planning your wedding!? Or one aspect you needed help with the most during the first stages of planning?
One thing I wish I knew before planning our wedding is that once you say wedding everything doubles in price. It’s really hard to stay in budget because everything is so expensive. I would find out what is most important for you and your groom and create a budget for each category before booking.
The wedding is fast approaching! The date is August 11th, 2018 at the Paséa Hotel & Spa in Huntington Beach.
