Floral Couture with Heart + Soul Floral Design Studio
I am so excited to have Heather from Heart + Soul on the Guide talking about a new wedding trend that is beautifully unique and if done properly can take your wedding look to the next level! Heather is so incredibly talented, innovative and if you’re completely obsessed with florals like myself you’re going to love this post! I’ll leave it to Heather to tell you all about her vision of Floral Couture.
Well hello! Heather here, owner and lead designer of Heart + Soul Floral
You know that amazing feeling you got when you knew you found The One? As luck would have it I got that feeling twice – once with my favorite person in the world, my husband Eric, and once when I designed with flowers for the first time. For me, flowers are my forever. I can’t get enough – the colors, the textures, the way they transform a room or bring a bride to tears the first time she sees her bouquet. I’m completely obsessed and I’m not afraid to say it.
My obsession leads me to constantly explore new and innovative ways to utilize flowers for weddings and events. Flowers can touch so many unexpected elements of a wedding – trailing across a bride’s updo, accenting the backdrop of a photo booth, or adorning a welcome sign as guests enter the reception.
Heart + Soul was born to help tell the story of your wedding. You spend so much time and attention planning your wedding down to the last detail and we will make sure your florals are no exception.
Who doesn’t love “Say Yes to the Dress”? The amazing fashion, the emotional moments, the hunt for what makes a bride feel like the best version of herself – it’s all wonderful! Hardly an episode goes by that doesn’t reaffirm my commitment to the wedding industry.
Truth be told, my high school or college-age self would have never told you I would be a wedding floral designer. I grew up aspiring to be in many forms of design including fashion, advertising, architecture, and interior design. Before starting my floral career, I worked for a local jewelry designer, decorated homes, and styled big life events for friends and family. I was obsessed with the details that brought a product or a home or an event to life. I always carried with me the same basic principles no matter what I was designing.
Be bold.
If you are going to commit to a project, completely immerse yourself in it.
Push the boundaries of what’s expected.
Constantly seek inspiration.
I always encourage couples to consider how flowers can become a part of their wedding in ways they had never considered before. My current focus is to shine light on the idea of bridal floral couture. “Say Yes to the Dress” encourages women to dream big, and to immerse themselves in the process of curating a look that makes them feel their most beautiful on their wedding day. When a bride tries to imagine how she will look on the big day, she may think of the perfect shoes, her gown, her earrings, the right shade of lipstick, a veil that perfectly compliments her gown. How fun would it be if every bride could also imagine flowers playing a major role in what she is wearing? Should a wedding-appropriate necklace be limited to just pearls, rhinestones, and diamonds? At Heart + Soul Floral we think beyond what’s traditional and expected. We make rings, necklaces, earrings, ankle cuffs, hair pieces, carried floral pieces, and more. Even a bride’s bouquet should be considered part of her overall look! It should complete what the bride is telling the world she is on her wedding day.
What if on your hand, next to your engagement ring, was a stunning ranunculus with succulent accents? What if right above your veil was a small cluster of mini roses and tiny fern that mimicked the lace overlay of your dress? The possibilities are endless, and that detail is our passion.
Recently, we worked with a bride who has a huge group of friends. Most of those friends had already gotten married, and many of them had emphasized florals on their priority list. Flowers were really important to this bride as well, and she wanted to stand out from her friends, but she was struggling to articulate a vision of how to accomplish this. So, we met, and talked through all the details of her day – the dress, the hair, the makeup, the venue, and we reviewed a ton of pictures that she had found on Instagram and Pinterest. Together, we were able to build a design plan that truly represented her vision. It included a custom floral hairpiece, a floral ring, and a hoop bouquet. She was thrilled with the results, and couldn’t thank us enough!
So the big question: how do you start the conversation with your florist?
Well, the more you share the better!
- Details of your gown that you want to emphasize
- Lace
- Shape
- Sparkle
- Lines
- Skin
- Makeup Plans
- Natural
- Dark and moody
- Hairstyle Plans
- Updo
- Down and natural
- Waves
- Placement of your veil
- Bouquet Goals
- Size
- Texture
- Color
- Neutral
- Ribbon accents
- Shape
In closing, we want to emphasize a few things.
- There are many florists out there. Make sure you take the time find one you trust and one that seems to fully understand your vision.
- Flowers tend to take up a sizable portion of a wedding budget. So make your investment count by working with your florist to create a plan for your flowers that will wow your guests and will create photos that you will be excited to look back on year after year.
- Have fun with the process! It’s all about you and what makes you happy.
